  1. 1847-1922. Scottish-born US scientist and
  2. inventor of the telephone. He patented his
  3. invention 1876, and later experimented with a
  4. type of phonograph and, in aeronautics,
  5. invented the tricycle undercarriage. 
  6. Born in Edinburgh, Bell was educated at the
  7. universities of Edinburgh and London and
  8. studied under his father, who developed a
  9. method for teaching the deaf to speak. In
  10. 1870 the family moved to Canada and Bell came
  11. to the US, where he opened a school 1872 for
  12. teachers of the deaf in Boston. In 1873 he
  13. began teaching vocal physiology at Boston
  14. University. He became a US citizen 1882. 
  15. Bell also worked on converting seawater to
  16. drinking water and on air conditioning and
  17. sheep breeding.
